Music industry investigation

I would like to investigate the changing way in which people purchase music. Due to the improvement of technology people are changing the way the purchase music. Growing numbers of people now prefer to down load music due to its ease and convenience instead of purchasing the CD. I am hoping to gain the opinions of people regarding this topic, I also plan to interview them to see how they purchase their music.

The online age is destrying/ enhancing the music industry

I think that the online age is both enhancing and destroying the music industry. Thanks to online downloading this means more people are able to access music at their will and at a reasonable price. This means more people will be able to hear a band so they may go and buy tickets to one of their gigs as a result. However there are disadvantages to the online age sites such as lime wire and frostwire mean that people don’t have to pay for the music they download but it means that the artist and record company loose out on income. Stricter measure and new programmes are being developed to help combat this and ensure that the online age does enhance the music industry.

Music Investigation

Spotify
Is a music streaming programme that allows you to listen to music instantly with virtually no delays. Users can browse by music by searching for artists or track titles, although this music cannot be downloaded or saved. It is only available on a computer with an internet connection once you’ve downloaded the software. Spotify is financed by advertising although you can buy a premium version without advertising.

How could this affect the future of the music industry?
As users are not paying for the tracks they are not actually paying the record company or artist any money. However the company has struck up licensing deals with many top record companies which allows the music to be played. Another way they combated licensing was to provide direct links when a song is playing to purchase that song. As for the future if the music industry this could mean less people buying tracks because they can listen to free without breaking the law. On the other hand it could lead to wider exposure for artists and companies thanks to the advertising.

How is this useful way for thinking about how/ why audiences consume music?
Along with other programmes like this it shows how audiences are now spending a lot more time on the internet. Most music is now available to listen and download at a moments notice with the users demand, saving time and often money. This programme shows us the demand audiences have for listening to free or cheap music.

Why is this important area for debate in media studies?
As the convergence of music, internet and computers has grown there have been a few issues. Many people choose to download music illegally instead of paying for it. This site allows user to listen to it legally and save play lists but not to download it, allowing users to get free music legally.

Last.fm
Is a music community that collects information from the user, music from devices stations listened to, and then will recommend songs you may like. It also allows you to create playlists in the music library, listen to tracks on demand and download some tracks which the rights holder has authorised. This allows people to share their interests, it allows the music industry to help users discover new music that they like that they previously may not have been aware of. By allowing sharing of tracks it enables the future growth of artists. However as this is a free service no money is paid by the user it could mean that in the future artists are losing out on money as we no longer have to buy their music to listen to it. This service shows us the changing way users consume music. With the growth of online music services companies have to adapt the way they promote and provide their music. Last.fm shows us how audiences demand a way to listen to music for free and share it with others on line. There has been much debate about online music over whether the record company is losing out because of illegal down loads and services like this which provide greater access to music for free.

Subculture
A group of people who have differences which define them from the larger culture. They can be distinguished by age, gender, and ethnicity. Members often signal their membership with specific symbols e.g. bracelet, fashion. Different subcultures may have different music genres that they are particularly interested in therefore they may only buy music from say the punk rock genre because that’s what the rest of the subculture does. This shows us how some audiences choose to listen to and buy music, as they belong to a subculture. Companies will try to appeal to these subcultures as they have a certain interest in music that will be reflected in the magazines and clothes they buy. By doing these they are hoping to sell more products by appealing to a niche market that will promote the product amongst themselves.

DRM
Digital rights management. Access control technologies that can be used by manufacturers and copy right holders in order to limit the use of their music so that it is fairly distributed and paid for. Use of these technologies could mean an end to illegal down loading and file sharing, which many people use because there is no cost. In the future it could mean that more people will have to buy music that that want to listen to because it is impossible to download it for free. Its is useful to consider that a lot of people particularly teen download it free or use file sharing programmes as a way of consuming their music, they will be especially effected by digital rights management. For a while now there has been debate over whether music should be free to download or must be paid for, it has now been made illegal to download music. However some audiences still argue that they have a right to down load or share music for free, audience vs. producer.
